Citizen Girl Wears Prada from the Devil

I just finished Citizen Girl and I hated it. Absolutely hated it. While reading through it, I felt like I was in the same Devil Wears Prada nightmare I'm still recovering from. Yuck.

The girls (McLaughlin and Kraus) must have had dinner with Lauren Weisberger and said: "Hey, you sold in the hundred thousands, we sold in that range, too -- wanna be our silent partner?"

What as disappointment. It feels like the crap Devil... all over again. For shame!

I wasn't crazy about Nanny Diaries. Actually, I found the style annoying, and on top of that, not much happened. However, I loved Devil Wears Prada. Apparently, I'm one of two people who did. From the excerpt I read of Citizen Girl, it doesn't seem like Prada.

I guess Citizen Girl reminds of Devil... because of the whole job from hell aspect to it. After a while, it begins to become redundant. Like in Devil..., when Andrea just kept going on and on and on about how miserable she was, and then a scene pops up to justify why she's miserable. Yuck.

And actually, I ended up hating Andrea more than Miranda. Which I'm sure Ms.Weisberger was not going for. But in the hands of a more competent writer or writers (like the former-geniuses, McLaughlin and Kraus) the book would have been a well written roman a clefThe Nanny Diaries was, in essence, the same basis of plot as Devil..., but McLaughlin and Kraus presented a book that was more varied in the terribleness of nanny-ing children of rich, delusive parents. Plus they decided to throw in a couple of nice sub-plots: Mr. X's affair, the money issue with Mr. X's mistress. And what I got from the book was an I-Hate-This-Job-Let-Me-Tell-You-Why feel, and I think McLaughlin and Krause did a terrifc job in telling us why, and they're portrayal of the relationship between Nanny and the X's son was icing on the cake.

However, it appears the girls only have one good book in them, Alas.
